| THELMA BENEDICT BRISTOL — Thelma Benedict, 77, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at her Bristol home, surrounded by family and friends. She was born Dec. 20, 1922, in Barnet. Thelma was a devoted mother to her children and loving wife of George W. Benedict for 58 years. She was a faithful member of the Middlebury congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses for 30 years and received much spiritual encouragement and love from her friends there. She leaves her husband, George W. Benedict; her sister, Theda Williams and her husband, Cecil, of St. Johnsbury; two daughters and their husbands, Dorothy and Dale Orvis of New Haven, and Judy and Van Orvis of Clinton, S.C.; son Rock and his wife, Jennifer Benedict, of Bristol; son Randy Benedict and his fiancee, Linda Burbo, of Bristol; five grandchildren, Rebecca, Matthew, Jonathan, Zachary, and Caleb; one great-grandson, Shawn; her much-loved sisters-in-law and their husbands, Marjorie and Rollie Benedict of Bristol, and May and Phil Benedict of Bristol. A memorial service will be held Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Middlebury Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses (Route 116, East Middlebury). | ANTHONY HENRY BUSHWAY, SR. SOUTH HERO — Anthony Henry Bushway, Sr., 55, died Tuesday, August 1, 2000 at his home in South Hero following a short illness. Tony was born in Burlington on May 22, 1945, the son of Sears and Alma Rose (Sorrell) Bushway. On June 5, 1964 he married Marjorie Baker and they made their home in the islands. Tony had owned and operated Bushway’s Garage in South Hero for many years. He had founded the South Hero Institute of Technology. He also volunteered for many church functions at St. Rose of Lima, where he was a member. He was also an avid snowmobiler and drag racer. Tony was a member of the Naval Reserve, and of the Army Reserve where he was a member of the 131st Engineers. He is survived by his wife Marge; and his mother-in-law, Marjorie Baker of South Hero; by his children Jody Hunter and her husband Daniel of Roanoke, Va., Anthony Bushway II of South Hero, Casey Bushway of East Providence, R.I.; by his grandchildren, Alecx and Ryan Hunter; by his sisters, Judith Breault of St. Petersburg, Fla., Ruby Guyette of Goshen, N.H., Carol Vallee of St. Petersburg, Fla.; his brothers, David Bushway of Colchester and Ronnie Bushway of Grand Isle; by his sisters-in-law, Faye Baker of South Hero, Paula Mott of Hinesburg; and his brother-in-law, Russell Baker, Jr. of Milton. Tony’s family wishes that, for those who can do so, everyone gather at Tony’s home at 23 Sunrise Drive, prior to the service, for a walking procession to St. Rose. The service time at St. Rose of Lima will be 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2000. Following Mass, everyone is invited to process back to Tony and Marge’s home for a closure ceremony under the big oak tree. Immediately following, everyone is invited to an old fashioned barn dance at Pearly Dubuque’s old barn at the corner of Hyde Road ad Pearl Street. | WILLIAM HAROLD CONGER SR. HIGHGATE SPRINGS — William Harold Conger Sr., 61, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at his home on Country Club Road, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at noon from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. Interment services will take place Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at 3 p.m. from the Conger family lot in Hope Cemetery in Georgia. | NATALIEANNE ""NAN” S. CRAMTON MONKTON — Natalieanne ""Nan” S. Cramton died Aug. 1, 2000, in Vermont Respite House surrounded by her loving family. Nan was born April 15, 1929, in Weehauken, N.J., the daughter of Lee and Rose Smith. She graduated from Rutgers University and toured the country directing local theater productions until she met and married her beloved husband, Dick, on June 20, 1953, in Bryn Mawr, Pa. They moved to Vermont in 1961, where she directed the Chittenden County Red Cross water safety program in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Making sure Vermont children were safe in the water was one of her passions. Many will remember her fondly for her years of service as church secretary at the First Congregational Church in Burlington. She helped her husband start and operate their business, Engineered Monofilaments. She loved to paint and was an accomplished cook. She treasured her role of wife and mother. She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Dick; and daughters Holly and Deb. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Dan Woods. There will be a memorial service Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at 11 a.m. in Monkton Friends Methodist Church in Monkton. | MILLIE A. LINDBERG SOUTH BURLINGTON — Millie A. Lindberg, 89, of South Burlington passed away Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, after a long illness. She was born Oct. 14, 1910, in Bridgeport, Conn., the daughter of the late Martin and Agnes (Yasenec) Remenar. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry O. Lindberg; a brother, Joseph Remenar of Stratford, Conn.; and a sister, Helen Tomasko of Monroe, Conn. She is survived by a brother, Frank Remenar of Monroe, Conn.; a son, Harry M. Lindberg of South Burlington; a daughter, Gail Leiby of Milford, Conn.; a niece and nephew of Connecticut; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at noon in St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery. | PAULINE B. SAYAH WATERBURY CENTER — Pauline B. Sayah, 93, passed away peacefully at her home with her family by her side Monday, Aug. 1, 2000. Born in Moretown on Aug. 26, 1906, she was the daughter of the late James H. and Mary (Moore) Buck. June 22, 1932, she married Earl I. Sayah in Moretown. Mr. Sayah passed away March 27, 1992. Pauline was a 1924 graduated of Waterbury High School and continued her education in teachers’ training at Montpelier Seminary. Upon graduation, she taught at the Flanagan School in Moretown, the Vaughn School in Middlesex Center and later for the town of Orange school system. Busy as a homemaker and raising her eight children, she later returned to teaching as a substitute for various school districts in the central Vermont area. Interested in library services, she returned to school, attending the University of New Hampshire in Durham, where she received an associate’s degree in library science. She worked for the state library in Montpelier for several years and later served as the librarian in Waterbury Center for 17 years. She was a member of the Middlesex United Methodist Church and for many years also attended the Waterbury Center Community Church. An 80-year member of the Grange, she became a member of the Middlesex Grange at the age of 14 and continued her membership with Waterbury Grange No. 237 with which she held several positions. She held memberships also with the state and national Grange. Other memberships included the PTA of which she was a past president and the Waterbury Home Demonstration Club. In her leisure time, she enjoyed collecting post cards and crocheting, and she was an avid reader. She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Arlene and Gerry Sutton of Morrisville, Margaret and Burt Tatro of Wolcott, and Betty and Joe Langsam of Short Hills, N.J.; five sons and their wives, James and Marguerite ""Peggy” Sayah of Meriden, Conn., Lawrence ""Lefty” and Fran Sayah of Waterbury, Robert and Barbara Sayah of North Haledon, N.J., Wil and Sue Sayah of Waterbury Center, and Charlie and Margo Sayah of Waterbury Center; 28 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; a lifelong friend, Winona Hoffman of Waterbury Center; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Arthur Buck; and a grandson, Eric Donald Sayah. Funeral services will be held from the Middlesex United Methodist Church on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the family lot in Middlesex Center Cemetery. | AVIS (COBB) GOODSELL COLCHESTER — Avis (Cobb) Goodsell, 81, died unexpectedly in Fletcher Allen Health Care on Wednesday, August 2, 2000. She was born in Jeffersonville on June 22, 1919, the daughter of the late Eugene and Effie (Woodside) Cobb. She grew up in Rutland and graduated from Rutland High School in 1936 and UVM in 1940, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. She received her Masters Degree from Plattsburgh State Teachers College. She married Elisha R. Goodsell in Proctor in 1943. He predeceased his wife in 1993. Avis taught math at the high school and junior college levels for many years. Avis spent her winters in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where she was a member of the Coronado Methodist Church. Her hobbies included gardening, cribbage and bridge. She is survived by her son, Brent Goodsell of Syracuse, N.Y.; her three daughters, Brenda Roy of Yarmouth, Maine, Barbara Maas of Norfolk, Va., Sandra Collins of Rutland; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Wanda Edwards of Largo, Fla., Frances Krattebol of Cape Coral, Fla.; many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 5, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Prim Road, Colchester. | ROBERT V. HANSEN SOUTH ALBURG — Robert V. Hansen, 84, a resident of this community since 1951, died Wednesday morning, August 2, 2000, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington. Bob was born in Aarhus, Denmark, July 2, 1916, the son of the late Hans Peter and Ingeborg Augusta (Ipsen) Hansen. He attended schools in Denmark, instructed in the skills of carpentry. On March 24, 1949, he married the former Gudny Madsen, who survives him. In his earlier years, Bob served his country in the Danish Army and after coming to this country, served in the United States Army during WWII. Following his discharge from active duty he became a member of the Vermont Army National Guard. Living in the Alburg Community, he was associated for many years with the Alburg School District and was a member of the Columbus Lodge #11, F. & A.M. serving twenty-five years as its secretary. In addition to his wife, Gudny of 51 years, Bob leaves two sons, John Hansen and his wife, Florence of Champlain, N.Y. and Paul Hansen of Alburg; two daughters, Mary Ann Mogerley and her husband, Stephen of Califon,N.J. and Connie Forbes and her husband, Ken of Stowe as well as a daughter-in law, Beatrice Hansen of Isle La Motte. He is also survived by his brother Paul Hansen and his wife, Linda of Grand Isle, and two sisters, Agathe Hansen and Emma Moller both of Denmark, His grandchildren, David and Josee Hansen, Steven and Heather Hansen and Eric, Neil and Kevin Mogerley; great-grandchildren, Bradley, Amanda, Alyssa, and Kai Hansen and several nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by a son, Henry Hansen in November of 1995. Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 6, 2000 at 3 p.m. followed by full Military Honors, in the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. The Rev. Deborah Laporte, pastor of the Champlain Islands United Methodist Parishes will officiate. As part of the funeral services, a Masonic Ritualistic Service will be exemplified by members of the Columbus Lodge. Private interment will take place at a later date in the South Alburg Cemetery. | CHARLES ""BRUCE” HUMPHREYS ESSEX CENTER — Charles ""Bruce” Humphreys, 62, of Essex passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday, August 2, 2000 after a long respiratory illness. He was born in Pittsburgh, Penn. on December 29, 1937, the son of the late Charles E. Humphreys and Edna S. Humphreys. He served in the army from 1961-1963. He worked for Koppers in Pittsburgh before going to I.B.M. He retired from I.B.M. in 1992. Following his retirement, he worked for the Merchants Bank as a courier. He had many hobbies, which included fishing, hunting, woodworking and photography. He is survived by his wife, Lois; two daughters, A. Michelle Mitchell and her husband, Michael, Wendy S. Campbell and her husband, Ronald; one stepson, James A. Gabrielse and his wife, Gina; five grandchildren, Joshua and Jessica Mitchell, Alexander (""Axel”), Joseph and Suel Gabrielse; one sister, Elizabeth H. Jachim of Tacoma, Wash.; and one brother, Richard R. Humphreys of Petersburg, W. Va.; as well as many friends, who include, Myron and Cindy Palmer, Paul Betz and William and Lynne Leipold and many others he has met over the years. Bruce was a kind and giving person and was a good friend to everyone. He will be greatly missed. | BARBARA J. JARVIS PERRIS, CALIF. — Barbara J. Jarvis (Root), 66, passed away on August 2, 2000. She was born in Burlington, on May 30, 1934, the daughter of the late Arthur F. Root and Evelyn (Root) Saintheart. She owned and operated the Woodcrest Glass Company in Calif. with her husband for many years. She was known for her quick wit and great sense of humor. Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Edward J. (Sonny) Jarvis; her son, Edward Jarvis, Jr.; her daughter, Janine (Jarvis) Clements; her four grandchildren, Steven, Janelle, Janessa and Jannen Clements, all of Perris, Calif. She is also survived by her family in Vt., two brothers, Arthur J. Root, and wife Jerry, Terry Clayton (Butch) Root and wife, Kaye; four sisters, Dorothy Hubacher, Helen Koch and husband, Robert, Sally St. Gelais and husband, Paul, Pauline Thayer, and husband, Lloyd. She leaves behind her sister-in-law, Madeline Bell of Buffalo, N.Y., a special aunt, Marion Root of Perris, Calif.; and many friends; cousins; nieces and nephews. | IRENE STEBBINS BRADFORD — Irene T. Stebbins, 82, formerly of North Winooski Avenue, Burlington, died in Brookside Nursing Home in Bradford on Aug. 2, 2000. Irene was born in Poultney on June 7, 1918, the daughter of Warren Joseph and Lillian (Desany) Stebbins. She was the sister of Dr. Arthur P. Stebbins and Samuel L. Stebbins. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1937, attended the University of Vermont for two years and graduated from Burlington Business College in 1942. She worked as secretary for the chairman of the board of St. Michael’s College for several years. Irene was a member of St. Joseph parish. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Co-Cathedral. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. | J. ANDRE BOURDON JR. MIDDLEBURY/FERRISBURGH — J. Andre Bourdon Jr., 48, passed away at his residence Aug. 3, 2000. He was born in Middlebury March 20, 1952, the son of Andre J. Bourdon Sr. and Elizabeth (Connley) Bourdon. He was a graduate of Middlebury Union High School, Class of 1970. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1975. In the 1970s, he served with the National Guard. Since 1983 Andy had been the co-owner of Bourdon Insurance Agency in Middlebury. Andy had served on the Middlebury Zoning Commission. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church. He was active with the Knights of Columbus and had been a Grand Knight for three years. He had also served as treasurer for the Addison County Fair and Field Days for three years. He enjoyed working in the fields, doing haying and related farming activities. His other interests included restoring old houses. Andy was known for his big, lovable heart and kind and gentle nature. He is survived by his parents; his brother, Kevin Bourdon and his wife, Susan, of Waltham; his sisters, Karen Gorin and her husband, Michael, of Manassas, Va., Cheryl Pickreign and her husband, Richard, of Essex, and Susan and her husband, Randy Laframboise, of Cornwall. He is also survived by his nieces, Alison Bourdon and Megan Laframboise; his nephews, Mark Bourdon, Scott Bourdon, Chris Rampone, Jack Laframboise, Matthew Pickreign, Andrew Pickreign, and Timothy Wright; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Bruce Bourdon, in 1972. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at noon in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury. Interment and committal services will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Cornwall. A reception will follow in the Knights of Columbus hall in Middlebury. | JANE CAROLINE CANNING ANDOVER, N.H. — Jane Caroline Canning, 51, educator, linguist, author and lifelong human rights activist, died Aug. 3, 2000, of complications of lupus erethematosis. Jane Canning received her master’s degree from the School for Social Research in New York City. She was a sociologist, specializing in Latin American studies, with a Ph.D. from Rutgers University. Attached to the faculty of the University of Merida in Venezuela, she taught and traveled extensively in South America. She became the director of special education services in the Fall Mountain Regional School District in Langdon and later in Hopkinton. Recently, in collaboration with other scholars, she had been writing and editing textbooks on Latin American art. Also included was a volume on "Latinos in Film and the Salvadore Allende Reader’ and contracted on a review of "Sports and Culture in Latin America.’ She leaves a daughter, Doyle Canning of Andover; her mother, Elizabeth Canning of Langdon; a sister, Carol Canning of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a brother, Jay Canning of Burlington, Vt. There are no calling hours, and memorial services will be held in Andover at a later date. | RUTH E. DAHL SHELBURNE — Ruth E. Dahl, 80, of Shelburne, died August 3, 2000, after a period of failing health at her summer residence in Eaton, N.H. Born in Conway, N.H., the daughter of Charles O. and Bertha (Ellis) Dahl, she was a lifelong resident before moving to Wake Robin in Shelburne in October of 1993. Miss Dahl graduated from Kennett High School in Conway, N.H. She also graduated from Wellesley College in 1941, and attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston, Mass. Ruth was manager of Charles O. Dahl Insurance Agency prior to World War II. During the war, she was Legal Secretary in Chance Vaught Aircraft Factory in Conn., and worked on contracts for the F-14 fighter aircraft. She was also a research writer at the Association of Casualty and Surety Executives in N.Y. City. She did research for a pamphlet called A Career in Insurance For You, which was written for GI’s being discharged from the service. Following World War II, she returned to Conway and became a partner with the Charles O. Dahl Insurance Agency, with her sister, Helen, until her retirement. Miss Dahl was a long time member of the Conway Village Congregational Church, served as Financial Secretary and Secretary of the Building Committee. The family includes: her sister, Helen S. Dahl of Shelburne; a nephew, Robert P. Cote of Gorham, N.H. and several cousins. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Conway Village Congregational Church in Conway, with the Rev. Dr. Richard F. Wilcox officiating. Burial will be in the Conway Village Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours. | MARY (KELLEY) FLYNN BURLINGTON — Mary (Kelley) Flynn, 94, died Thursday, August 3, 2000 in Burlington Health and Rehabilitation following a brief illness. She was born in Hoboken, N.J, February 3, 1906, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Carty) Kelley. She married Daniel Flynn on December 30, 1932 in Union City, N.J. He predeceased her on September 1, 1975. She is survived by three daughters, Mary Kaudern and husband, Bertil of Pearl River, N.Y., Ann Flyntz and husband, John of Sparta, N.J., Rita Villa of Burlington, Vt.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Betty Lagrua of Arlington, Va.; and nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, August 11, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. in Epiphany Church, Second Ave., N.Y.C., with burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, N.J. | CLIFFORD FRANK FORGAYS ESSEX CENTER — Clifford F. Forgays of Essex Center died at his home Aug. 3, 2000, from pancreatic cancer. He was born in Coopersville, N.Y., on Oct. 8, 1920, the son of Edward and Mary (Martin) Forgays. July 10, 1943, he married Virginia M. Patnode in St. Amadeus Church in Alburg. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He worked at the American Woolen Mill in Winooski until its closing. He retired from Shelburne Museum in October 1983. The couple have resided in Essex Center most of their married life., He was a member of St. Pius X Church for 50 years. Clif will be remembered for his artistic talents including his carvings, oil paintings and antique restorations he did for his family as well as many special projects at Shelburne Museum and for J. Watson Webb at his Shelburne home, the Brick House, and his home in California. He and his wife were foster parents to many children over a period of 25 years. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Virginia Forgays of Essex; his four children, son Lanny and his wife, Gail Forgays, of Westord; three daughters and their spouses, Sherry and John Giroux, Debora and Dennis Batchelor, and Sandra and Carl Welcome, all of Essex; eight grandchildren and their families, Shane Forgays, Patrick and Liza Giroux, Brian and Tina Giroux, Michele and Tony Arcovitch, Denise and Russell Groll, Dustin Batchelor, Eric Welcome and Sarah Welcome; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Edward Forgays of Farmingdale, N.Y., and Sanford Forgays of Hopedale, Ohio; two sisters, Gertrude Penoyer of Clearfield, Pa., and Dorothy Penoyer of Martins Ferry, Ohio; as well as several nieces and nephews; He was predeceased by one sister, Viola Martin; and two brothers, Joseph and Earl Forgays. | WILLIAM M. HALL LEXINGTON, Mass./CHARLOTTE, Vt. — William M. Hall died peacefully Aug. 3, 2000, in Lexington at the age of 94. Dr. Hall was the husband of the late Sarah Redfern Hall, also of Lexington. He is survived by sons Peter of Wellfleet, Mass., Joseph of Basking Ridge, N.J., and Stephen of Kittery Point, Maine; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Dr. Hall was a resident of Lexington for more than 60 years and a lifelong summer resident at Thompsons Point in Charlotte. As a high school and college student in Burlington, Vt., he was responsible for the design and construction of WCAX, the first radio station in Vermont. He received a doctor of science degree from MIT in the department of Electrical Engineering. At the Acoustics Lab at MIT, he did pioneering work in sound transduction and propagation. During 1940 and 1941, he was head of the Indicator Group of the MIT Radiation Laboratory. At the start of World War II, when his expertise in electronics was needed for the defense effort, he transferred to Raytheon Company, where he was responsible for the design, development and installation of the first radar aboard ships in the U.S. Navy. He received a certificate of commendation from the U.S. Government for this effort. He served as the head of Raytheon’s Microwave Laboratory for two years and manager of advanced development for one year. He went on to become Director of Developmental Engineering at Raytheon, his title when he retired in 1971. Dr. Hall was the first person to be awarded Raytheon’s distinguished title of consulting scientist. He was a member of the Security Resources Panel of the Institute for Defense Analysis and a member of Research and Development Board Subpanel on Surface Surveillance Radar. He holds 37 patents covering infrared, instrument landing systems and radar devices and has published a number of articles in these fields. Dr. Hall was a member of Sigma Xi, a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. Dr. Hall was active in community activities. He served on the Appropriations Committee of the town of Lexington, was active in youth activities, and was one of the founding members of Pilgrim Congregational Church. His interests included skiing, hiking and sailing on his beloved Lake Champlain. His drive and intellectual curiosity went beyond the scientific field to the natural world around him. He was active in The Union of Concerned Scientists, the Sierra Club and The Audubon Society. He was a devoted and loving husband and father. | MELVILLE PAGE MAURICE II BURLINGTON — Melville Page Maurice II, died August 3, 2000 in Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was 82. He was born September 28, 1917 in Burlington, the son of Melville Page Maurice and Lillian MacGibbon Maurice. He graduated from Burlington High School, where he was a member of the Debating Society. He attended the University of Vermont, majoring in mechanical engineering. He was a member of Sigma Phi Society. In 1942, he joined the United States Army and served in the 268th Coast Artillery. He served three years in the Pacific, in Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands and the Phillippines. In 1946, he married Margaret Armstrong in Bishop’s Chapel at Rock Point. He owned Terminal Pharmacy, 131 St. Paul Street, from 1949 to 1982. He was a member of the Vermont Pharmaceutical Association, the United States Power Squadron, and the U. S. Army Reserve. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his daughter, the Rev. Page Towne and her husband, Gary S. Towne, their sons, Jonathan and Andrew, of Grand Forks, N.D.; his son, John Norton Maurice, his wife, Nancy Caldwell, their daughters, Jessica and Meaghan of Portland, Maine; his son Donald (Dewey) Maurice and his wife, Elsie, their children, Margaret, Charles and Daniel of Shelburne; his daughter-in-law, Geralynn Anne Thornton, of Shelburne, and her son, Melville Page Maurice IV and his wife, Eileen and daughter, Hannah, of Staten Island, N.Y. | REV. J.H. NORMAND NADEAU BRATTLEBORO – The Rev. J.H. Normand Nadeau, 61, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, in Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. He was born in Holyoke, Mass., on Feb. 9, 1939, the son of Roland and Irene (Brunelle) Nadeau. Father Nadeau attended grade school and graduated from Precious Blood High School in Holyoke, Mass., attended Hampden College of Pharmacy and St. Hyacinthe College in Quebec, Seminary of Philosophy in Montreal, and graduated from Grand Seminary in Montreal in 1968. Father Nadeau was ordained for the priesthood at St. Michael Church in Brattleboro on Sept. 19, 1968, by the Most Rev. Robert F. Joyce, bishop of Burlington. He began his priestly ministry as an assistant at St .Augustine parish in Montpelier (1968-1972); at Holy Family parish in Essex Junction (1972-1973); at Immaculate Heart of Mary parish in Rutland (1973-1975); and as chaplain of the University of Vermont Newman Center (1975-1977). His first pastorate was at St. Theresa parish in Orleans (1977-1979); transferred as pastor to St. Paul parish in Barton (1979-1985); transferred as pastor to St. Bernadette parish in Bridport (1985-1988); and transferred to St. Francis parish in Windsor (1988-1993). In June 1993, Father Nadeau was appointed pastor of St. Michael parish in Brattleboro, where he was serving at the time of his death. Father Nadeau served as director of The Marriage Encounter for the dioceses from 1972-1977 and served on the Priests’ Senate. Father Nadeau is survived by two brothers, Robert of Chicopee, Mass., and Leonard of Ludlow, Mass. He was predeceased by his parents, Roland and Irene (Brunelle) Nadeau. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at 11 a.m. in St. Michael’s Church in Brattleboro with the Most Rev. Kenneth A. Angell as principal celebrant. | HAROLD H. CURRIER VERGENNES — Harold H. Currier passed away Aug. 4, 2000, in Porter Hospital in Middlebury after a very brief illness due to pancreatic cancer. He was born Jan. 26, 1918, in Ferrisburgh, the son of Percy andMaude (Stone) Currier. He attended schools in Ferrisburgh and Vergennes. He worked on the railroad prior to Simmonds Precision Products, where he worked 43 years until his retirement in 1982. Harold was a kind, gentle man who was always there, ready to help. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and excelled as a deer hunter. Long rides in the evening with his best friend, Winnie Austin, was a longstanding tradition. He is survived by his son and his wife, Robert and Ruth Currier of Huntington; a grandson, Todd Currier; granddaughters Karen Audette, Sara Currier and Dianna Currier; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine (Bacon) Currier; a brother, Clayton; and sisters Dorothy, Pauline, Frances, and Laura. | ROGER ""OZZIE” O. STYGLES JR. HYDE PARK — Roger ""Ozzie” O. Stygles Jr., 72, passed away unexpectedly in Copley Hospital on Friday, Aug. 4, 2000. He was born July 8, 1928, in Hyde Park, the son of Roger O. Stygles Sr. and Maggie (Clegg) Stygles. Roger was a graduate of the Class of 1946 at Peoples Academy in Morrisville. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS H.W. Gilmore, Sub Tender AS-16, stationed in Key West, Fla., from 1948-1952. He achieved the rank of petty officer first class. After returning from his service in the Navy, he married Audrey (Talman) Stygles in Johnson in 1954. He worked for C.H. Dana Company in Hyde Park before becoming a postal clerk at the Hyde Park Post Office. He retired from the post office in 1984. Roger’s interests included old cars, flea markets and collectibles. He enjoyed people and was well known for always sharing a topic for conversation. Above all else, he will be remembered as a loving, kind and caring grandfather and great-grandfather. | SALLY JEANNE BARNES SWANTON — Mrs. Sally Jeanne Barnes, 54, went to her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000. She joint Him peacefully surrounded by her loving family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. For many years, Sally was a resident of Huntington and also of Ferrisburgh. Mrs. Barnes was born in Burlington on Feb. 17, 1946, the daughter of Oakley and Beulah Mercey. She was a graduate of Vergennes Union High School. She married Francis Barnes in June 1964. She was a member of St. Amadeus Church in Alburg. She was a loving, devoted wife and mother who dedicated her life unselfishly in thoughts and deeds toward friends, neighbors and, especially, family. Sally loved the outdoors, where she spent many hours in her flower beds, boating and bird watching. She had a love for animals that included her pet goats, rabbits and her special little dogs. She was a wonderful cook and loved serving all who came into her home. Mrs. Barnes is survived by her husband, Francis Barnes of Swanton; four daughters, Lisa Mitchell and her husband, William, of Starks-boro, Wendy Blanchette and her husband, Michael, of Colchester, Kristina (Kristy) LaPlant and her husband, Dana, of Richmond, and Stacy Andrews and her husband, Eric, of Richmond; a sister, Paula Forgues and her husband, Raymond, of Benson; 12 grandchildren, Justin, Ethan, Breeanna, Kylee, Tristyn, Cory, Avery, Trevor, Bailee, Sumner, Sully and Sophie. | JOHN DANA CLIFFORD MONTPELIER — John (Jack) Dana Clifford of Montpelier, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 5, 2000 while working at his camp in South Hero. Born March 15, 1929 in Montpelier, the son of Seward Vaughn and Mary Dana Clifford, all longtime residents of Montpelier and Vt. He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1947, and from Norwich University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in June, 1951, and as an Army Officer. He worked for the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VAOT) during summers and holidays while at Norwich, and continued to do so after military service. After graduating from Norwich, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the U.S. Army in August of 1951. He continued his military service as a reserve officer until he retired in July, 1981 as a Colonel. He worked as a professional engineer for the VAOT on numerous construction projects, but most notably as District 2 Highway Maintenance Engineer in Brattleboro. He served as resident engineer overseeing many construction projects, including the intitial building of the Vermont Interstate Highway System. Jack retired in 1993, after 40 years of dedicated service. In retirement from the State, Jack was co-owner and businessman at Vermont Toy & Hobby in South Burlington with his sons, Bob and Mark. Jack is survived by his wife of 46 years, Martha Tiffany Clifford; brother, Robert V. Clifford and wife, Susan Clifford of Temple Hills, Md.; a daughter, Mary Diane of Montpelier; four sons, John T. and wife, Penny Clifford of Burlington, Robert L. and wife, Annmarie Clifford, and grandchildren, Kelley, Carrie and Samantha of North Hero; Mark D. | WILLIAM RUDOLPH HAUKE COLCHESTER/BURLINGTON — William R. Hauke Sr., 87, well-known area building contractor, died at his summer home in Colchester on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000. He was born July 10, 1913, in Burlington, the son of Rudolph C. and Anna (Berger) Hauke. He graduated from Burlington High School in 19321 and the University of Vermont in 1935. Oct. 10, 1935, he married Ellinor Bean in the Webster family home in Randolph. Mr. Hauke owned and operated Hauke Building Supply and constructed a great number of the housing developments in the area. He was involved with many philanthropic causes and was a member of the Lions Club of Burlington for 60 years. He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Ellinor; their three children and their families, William R. Hauke Jr., wife Carole A. and children David (Anne), Steven (Carol), Sandra (Paul) and Martha (Matt); his daughter, Lillian H., Venner, husband Bruce T. and their children Pam Annis (Bob), Karen Venner, and Lynn Knight (Chris); his daughter, Margaret H. Lanzetta, husband John L. Sr. and their children, John L. Jr., William H., and Allison B.; his adopted daughter, Gayle Pollock Roorda; adopted grandson and devoted friend, David McHugh; foster grandchild Melody Corcoran; 17 great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Mrs. Roland (Norma) Hauke; nephew Roland J. Hauke Jr. and Paula; and nieces Susan H. Mason (Bill) and Jean H. O’Neil (Terry). | JEANNE G. NIQUETTE BURLINGTON — Jeanne G. Niquette, 88, of Burlington died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, in Birchwood Terrace Healthcare after a long illness. She was born in Winooski on May 6, 1912, the daughter of the late Arthur and Bernadette (Beaudouin) Roy. Sept. 8, 1945, she married Morielle Niquette, who predeceased her, Together, they resided in Malletts Bay most of their lives. after Morielle’s death, she lived at Fern Hill in Burlington for eight years. Jeanne was employed at the American Woolen Mill and also did housework. She is survived by one sister, Lucienne Pare and her husband, Raymond, of Winooski. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Albert, Leo Paul, and Roland Roy. | JARVIS FRED SMITH LIHUE, HAWAII/SOUTH BURLINGTON — Jarvis Fred Smith, 52, died at his home in Lihue, Kauai, August 5, 2000. He leaves his wife, Denise Jacques Smith of Lihue; and his mother, Sylvia Jarvis Smith of South Burlington. Jarvis, who was known as Jeff to all his friends in Vt., spent his childhood in South Burlington and later attended Kimball Union Academy in N.H., and Rocky Mountain School in Colo. While an alternate member of the U.S. Olympic i Team, he contracted Bell’s Palsy, which took him out of competition. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, assigned to Alaska, where he was also a member of the ski team. Jarvis was always interested in car engines and became a Master Mechanic through the V.A. program for veterans. He was employed in Burlington car shops, and after his marriage to Denise, they moved to Bermuda, where he managed the six fuel stations on that island for a British company. Following that, the couple moved to Fla. and then the Grand Cayman Island. Having recognized the love they shared for island living, Jarvis and Denise found that Kauai, Hawaii appealed to them, so there they went a decade ago. Jarvis enjoyed tending his lovely garden, the opportunity Hawaii offered for engaging in underwater sporting activity, and took great pride in becoming expertly knowledgeable about the history and lore of his adopted state. Jarvis’s service in the military following his active duty in the U.S. Army included ten years in the VT Army National Guard from which he received an Honorable Discharge in 1990. At the time of his death, Jarvis was serving as an active member of the Hawaii Army National Guard. | MARILYN W. STEVENS HARDWICK — Marilyn W. Stevens, 69, of 160 Spring St. died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, in Central Vermont Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was born in Hardwick on Aug. 24, 1930, the daughter of A. Lynn and Martha (Graham) Wheeler. She graduated from Hardwick Academy in 1948. Feb. 20, 1954, she married Almont G. Stevens. Mrs. Stevens was a member of the United Church in Hardwick, where she belonged to Circle No. 8 and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a devoted wife and mother to their five children. She was also a caring grandmother to 11 grandchildren. Survivors include her husband of 46 years; one son and his family, Brian Stevens and his wife, Mary and their children, Jody and Cynthia, of Tampa, Fla.; four daughters and their families, Lynne McCullough, Bruce Bell, and Ian McCullough of Williamstown; Kim Greaves and her husband, Stephen and their children, Eric, Jenne, and Halley, of Greensboro Bend; Gayle Renaud and her husband, Terry and their children, Brooke, Jessica, and Anna, of Garland, Texas; and Susanne Richardson and her husband, Bill and their children, Heather and Brandi, of Duxbury. | MYONG JA ""PENNY” (KIM) SWEET BURLINGTON — Myong Ja ""Penny” (Kim) Sweet, 62, of Burlington, passed away late Saturday evening, August 5, 2000 in Fletcher Allen Health Care after a brief illness. Myong Ja was born in Korea on November 3, 1937. She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Sweet and Carolyn Sweeney both of Burlington, her life long companion and husband of many years, Earl H. Sweet, Sr. of Burlington; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her 3 sons, Earl Jr., Dale and David Sweet. She married Earl, Sr. during the Korean War and came to the United States at an innocent age of 20, with the first two of her five children. She was an absolutely amazing woman to come to a country where the language, customs and mannerisms were unfamiliar to her and leave her own country and family. She raised her children with love and affection and worked very hard to make sure they were happy. She made many, many friends throughout the years, and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. | KENNETH J. WIMBLE WAITSFIELD — Kenneth J. Wimble, 64, passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000. Born in Waitsfield on Jan. 9, 1936, he was the son of the late Claude and Rita Wimble. June 25, 1960, he married the former Lydia Green in Waitsfield. Ken attended schools in Waits- field and as a young man worked as a farmer. He later was employed at the Mad River Glen Ski Area and then as a truck driver, working with his brother, Owen, in his logging business. More recently, he worked for the F.G. White Fuel Co. of Waits-field, a career that spanned 24 years. He had since helped with his son David’s lawn-care business in Waitsfield. In his leisure time, he enjoyed going for walks with his dog, Max; gardening, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Lydia Wimble of Waitsfield; four sons, Stephen Wimble and his wife, Marsha, of Barre, David Wimble and his wife, Kristie, of Waitsfield, Gary Wimble of Locust Grove, Va., and Jason Wimble and his wife, Janie, of Middlesex; four grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Hunter Wimble, and Grady and Harper Wimble; a sister, Sally Tremblay of Waitsfield; three brothers, Owen Wimble Sr., Edward ""Bunker” Wimble, and Calvin Wimble, all of Waitsfield; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters, Sylvia, Kathleen, Caroline, and Hannah; and three brothers, Robert, Leo, and Donald. | MaeELLA FERNALD BURLINGTON — MaeElla (Brown) Fernald died at home with her loving family at her side Aug. 6, 2000, following a courageous battle with cancer. MaeElla was born in Burlington on Aug. 12, 1934, the daughter of Harley Brown Sr. and Dorothy (Muir) Brown. She attended Burlington schools. Mae married Ellsworth Fernald on March 15, 1952. Together with her husband, she raised eight children and worked two jobs. MaeElla worked alongside Ellsworth at theWillard Street Market as well as doing private housekeeping. For the past 10 years, she and Ellsworth had managed L&S Townhouses in Burlington. Mae was loved by all who knew her. She was beautiful inside and out. She was always a giver and never believed in giving up. Everything she did was done at 100%. Mae was honest and hardworking and instilled this in her children. She was a member of the Ladies of the Moose and the RVA, where she had many wonderful friends. She leaves her husband of 48 years, Ellsworth Fernald; eight children and their spouses, Dick and Kathy Fernald, Darla and Arnie White, Denise and Mike Valyou, Kevin and Lisa Fernald, Dwain Fernald, Gayle and Rick Fuerst, Joy and Jay LeBlanc, and Shellie Fernald and her partner, Kenny Letourneau; and a son-in-law, Robert Leuang. Mae is also survived by a brother, Harley Brown and his wife, Bertha; two sisters, Thelma Wilford and her husband, Jessie, and Mary Barnier and her husband, Jimmy; and many dear friends. He was born in Burlington on June 16, 1979, the son of Bruce M. and JoAnn (Severy) St. Lawrence. He attended Colchester Schools and graduated from Colchester High School in 1997. He was employed as a manufacturing technician with IBM. David loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, mountain biking, and skiing. He is survived by his mother, JoAnn Drew and her husband, Richard of Alburg Springs; his father, Bruce M. | WAULEITA EVA SHANGRAW BAKERSFIELD — Wauleita Eva Shangraw, 78, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in Verdelle Village Nursing Home in St. Albans following a long illness. Mrs. Shangraw was born in Fletcher on Nov. 27, 1921, the daughter of William and Alyda (Austin) Davis. Wauleita had retired from IBM following 24 years of service. She was very active with the Champlain Valley Agency on Aging, helping with the Senior Meals Program, and volunteered at Whitcomb Woods. She is survived by her children, Betty Laird and her husband, Victor, of Bakersfield, and Gary Shangraw and his wife, Charlotte, of Westford; a daughter-in-law, Rita Shangraw of Winooski; and grandchildren Tonia Bouchard, Charlotte Laird, and Joshua Laird; great-grandchildren Amanda and Ciara, Avalon, Cooper, and Robert. She is also survived by her sisters, Barbara Moquin of Shelburne, and Bea MacDonald of Canada; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her former husband, Eugene Earl Shangraw Jr., in 1991; and a son, Donald Shangraw, in 2000; her parents; and her stepfather, Jay Buckley. | BETTY JEAN (COREY) AUSTIN LYNDONVILLE — Betty Jean (Corey) Austin, 64, of Pudding Hill in Lyndonville, died August 7, 2000 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 24, 1935 in Danby, the daughter of John and Edna Corey. Betty attended Danby schools and graduated from Jeanne Mance School of Nursing in Burlington. She worked in the nursing profession for many years both in hospitals and nursing home facilities. Betty was most happy working in her beautiful flower gardens, watching the birds, fishing, and spending time with her family. She was a kind and caring person who was always doing for others. The love and memories she has given to her family will remain with us always; she will be forever missed. She leaves her husband of fifteen years, James Austin of Lyndonville (1739 Little Egypt Rd. 05851); two sons, Jeffrey Keyworth and wife, Lisa of Lyndonville, and Todd Keyworth and wife, Lisa of Colchester; two daughters, Leslie Keyworth and fiance, David Hills of Middlebury and Lisa Courcy of South Burlington. | MARY FRANCES EUSTACE BURLINGTON — Mary Frances Eustace, 65, of Williston, departed on her journey home following her death on Monday evening, August 7, 2000 in the Birchwood Terrace Healthcare, Burlington. Mary was born in New York City on September 17, 1934, the daughter of Patrick and Bridget Sheehan Foley. Raised and educated in New York City, she was a graduate of Saint Vincent Ferris High School. Mary was married November 3, 1956 to Maurice P. Eustace in the Sacred Heart Church in Bronx, N.Y. During her adult life as wife and mother, she also worked at General Motors Corporation, New York City, and the Chittenden Bank and Trust Company of Vt. She was a member of the worshipping community of Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Williston. Mary is survived by her husband of forty-three years, Maurice; a daughter, Karen and her husband, David Claghorn; two sons, Thomas and his wife, Jane Eustace and Timothy and his wife, Kathleen Eustace; her grandchildren, Sean, Kayla, Ryan, Meghan Eustace and Patrick Claghorn. | JOSEPH L. MADKOUR BENNINGTON — Mr. Joseph L. Madkour, 77, a resident of 401 Jefferson Heights, Bennington, died unexpectedly at his residence Monday morning. He was born in Lawrence, Mass. July 22, 1923. He was the son of the late Louis Madkour and the former Louise Beshara. He received his education in Bennington and was a graduate of Bennington High School Class of 1942. He married the former Mary (Bliss) McGarey at Saint Francis De Sales Church December 29, 1966. Mr. Madkour was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. Mr. Madkour along with his family owned and operated Madkours Market. The business started as a vegetable and fruit stand on Main Street. Joe, along with his late father Louis, traveled door to door with their horse and cart selling their produce. Joe later moved the business to 519 Main Street where he ran the store until a fire destroyed the building. Following the fire, Joe retired from the business. In earlier years, Joe enjoyed singing in bands. His favorite song was ""Tangerine”. He enjoyed playing golf and tennis. His family, especially his grandchildren, were his main interest. He enjoyed meeting close friends daily for coffee and Friday evenings for dinner. He was a member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks 567, the Knights of Columbus Council 307, and the American Legion Post 1332. Survivors include his wife, Mary Madkour of Bennington; three daughters, Pamela J. Murphy of Haverhill, Mass., Pat Berard of Oneonta, N.Y., and Carrie B. Major of Rutland; a son, Michael J. McGarey of Bennington; five grandchildren, McKenzie M. Murphy of Los Angeles, Calif., Nicole F. Berard of Oneonta, N.Y., Ashleigh B. Berard of Oneonta, N.Y., Samuel J. Major and Maxwell J. Major, both of Rutland; one brother, Abraham J. Madkour of Manchester, Vt. Mr. Madkour is also survived by several cousins, including the Beshara family, Salem family, and MacKour family of Bennington and Lawrence, Mass. The funeral Mass celebrating the life of Joseph L. They lived in the Hyde Park area for most of their married lives, working and operating dairy farms until Ernest’s death in March of 1975. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Robert (Florence) Tenney of Wolcott; and her son, Ernie of Hyde Park; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister and two brothers. | FRIEDA M. WILDER ESSEX JUNCTION — Miss Frieda M. Wilder, born June 15, 1908, passed away August 7, 2000. Despite the affliction of polio suffered at age 6, Frieda lived a long and spirited life. Always smiling, always ready with a warm word for family and friends, Frieda met life with hard work and few complaints. She was a cook, homemaker and caregiver for her late mother, Maude (Cunningham) and father, Clyde Wilder, in their Jericho Center home. After her father passed away, Frieda moved to an apartment at Whitcomb Woods in Essex Junction. Here she entertained friends, indulged in her passion for collecting teddy bears, clocks, and dolls and engaged in sewing, needle point, crochet, and other crafts. Her infectious laugh and enthusiastic personality earned lasting friendship from everyone around her. She truly believed ""A stranger is a friend not met”. | ALBERT MICHAEL DONNA PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Albert Michael Donna, 78, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, in CVPH Medical Center. He was born in Sheldon, Vt., on Jan. 1, 1922, the son of Roy and Ellen (Demar) Donna. Albert was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He worked as a for the U.S. Postal Service as ab ubsoectir for 25 years. He was a member of the American Legion in St. Albans, Vt. Albert is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen (Roche) Donna of Plattsburgh. They were married Aug. 27, 1946, in St. Albans, Vt. Dussault, 80, a well-known prominent businessman, passed away early Tuesday, August 8, 2000 in Northwestern Medical Center following an extended illness. He was born in Ste. Sebastian, Quebec on September 20, 1919, the son of the late Hormidas and Marie Louise (Lareau) Dussault. On June 23, 1978, he married the former Dorothy Aldrich, who survives him. Paul had 45 years experience in the field of real estate transactions and appraisals and was a member and former Vice-Chairman of the Vermont Real Estate Commission and owned Affiliated Appraisers. Besides his wife, Dorothy, he is survived by a son and his wife, Lawrence and Diane Dussault of Frederick, Colo.; a step-son and his wife, David and Nancy Swainback of St. Albans; a step-daughter and her husband, Judy and Brian Hoben of Winter Haven, Fla.; a step-daughter-in-law, Sharon Swainback of Franklin; three sisters, Noelle Dussault of Burlington, Collette Dirmaier and her husband, Fred of Essex Junction, and Georgette Ranger of North Bay, Ontario; his sisters-in-law, Pauline Dussault of Richmond, Margaret Morgan of St. Albans, Lucille Brown and her husband, Curtis of St. Albans, Shirley Abell and her husband, Jim of Concord, N.C., and Joan Mulheron and her husband, Ralph; his brothers-in-law, Boyd Aldrich and his wife Barbara of Tyngsboro, Mass. and John Aldrich and his wife, Fran of Germantown, Md.; fourteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and twenty-eight nieces and nephews. | CAROL (HATHAWAY) SWEENEY-FULLINGTON WATERVILLE — Carol May (Hathaway) Sweeney-Fullington, 62, of Waterville, passed away peacefully in Fletcher Allen Health Care late Tuesday evening, August 8, 2000 with her family and friends by her side. She was born in Jamaica Plains, Mass. on May 16, 1938, the daughter of the late Melvin and Doris (Newton) Hathaway. She was a graduate of Champlain College moving to Fairfax in 1978 and then to Waterville in 1988. Carol found a very special, loving and lifelong true companion in her marriage to Forris ""Buster” Fullington in 1991. She was a member of the Waterville Union Church and very active with the Ladies Aid organization of Waterville. Carol was full of life and took great pride in out stepping her children whenever dancing. She also enjoyed knitting, watching baseball, playing cards and was especially fond of her Scrabble games. Although inflicted with painful Rheumatoid Arthritis for much of her life, Carol always remained positive, finding a loving smile for everyone. She was a great inspiration to her family, teaching them the value of being honest, hard working and loving to everyone. She gave unconditionally to others all her life, and continued to do so even in death as an eye donor so that others may see. Her pride and joy was her family and she especially treasured every precious moment spent with her grandchildren. Carol was a great mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by all of those who had the good fortune in their lives to know and love her. | RICHARD N. MEUNIER NEWPORT CENTER — Richard N. Meunier, 59, passed away at his home in Newport Center on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000. He was born April 18, 1941, the son of Gerard and Simone (Lapalme) Meunier. Richard worked for Jay Peak Ski Area for 39 years and was very involved in building the lifts and trail systems there. He worked as the trail groomer supervisor as well as groomer operator himself, his favorite job at the mountain. He enjoyed playing the piano, guitar and harmnica. He was a member of Vermont Curisillo since 1972. | WILLIAM E. TRAINOR BURLINGTON — William E. Trainor died on Tuesday, August 8, 2000 in Burlington. Born in Braintree, Mass. on August 14, 1921, he was the son of the late Laurence A. Trainor and Louise McCarthy Trainor. On July 29, 1944, he married Ruth Simpson Lewis. He attended Braintree schools, graduated from Harvard College, and attended the Littaeur School of Public Administration, as well as the BU Graduate School of Education. He served in World War II in the U.S. Army as an officer in the Field Artillery and as a General’s Aide in the Pacific. After the war, he served in the Mass. National Guard for over 20 years, retiring as Battalion Commander of the 1st Battalion, 101st Field Artillery, 26th Yankee Division. He was an American History teacher for five years, and then joined B.F. Goodrich Company. He worked in plants in Watertown, Mass., South Deerfield, Mass., Fort Wayne, Ind. and Camden, S.C. He was a member of the Harvard Varsity Club, the Braintree Historical Society, the Dugout Club, and was a former member of the Braintree School Committee, the Fort Jackson Golf Club, and the Harvard College Schools Committee. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; his three children, all of Burlington; son Robert and partner, Lavenia Medeiros and daughters, Martha Day and husband, Michael, and Susan Trainor and husband, William Orleans. He is also survived by his four beloved grandchildren, Megan, Kate, Louis and Max. A memorial libera service will be held at the UVM Catholic Center on Redstone Campus at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 15, 2000. | BARBARA P. DAVIS MIDDLEBURY — Barbara P. Davis, 52, died at home, Wednesday, August 9, 2000 surrounded by family and friends following an illness with cancer. She was born October 24, 1947 in Augusta, Ga. and moved to Vt. when she was two and one half years old.Barb attended Twinfield High School in Marshfield. She worked for the Counseling Service of Addison County over the past 15 years at the Evergreen House in Middlebury. While there, she helped hundreds of people recovering from mental illnesses. She set the tone for the program through her warmth, non-judgemental way of interacting with people, and her overall good nature. Barb thoroughly enjoyed her time spent with the people she worked with who became her second family, especially Glenda, Julia, Ed, and Linda. Our mother was very special to us and brought much joy to our lives. She always had a way of making us laugh with her quirky sense of humor. Mom had no problem embarrassing us in public with a smile on her face. It was one of her qualities we came to appreciate the most. She and her twin sister Sandy were especially close. Mom always managed to pop in on her just in time for dinner. She most loved spending time with her family, long walks, and her classical music. Survivors include three children, Bobbi Jo Leddick and her husband George of Swanton; Don Davis, Jr. and his wife, Lily of Bristol, and Leslie Davis of South Burlington; four grandchildren, Tiaunna, Page, and William Leddick, and Ryan Davis; three sisters, Polly Bartee of Va., Sandy Shusda of Hinesburg, and Debbie Hutchins of Del.; stepfather Lawrence Hutchins of Plainfield; and four stepbrothers, Michael of N.C., Daryle of Burlington, Bryce of Colchester, and Bradley of Vergennes; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Mark Page who died during the Korean War where he was a P.O.W., and her mother Helen Hutchins on October 6, 1997. We would like to thank all of her doctors and nurses at Fletcher Allen Health Care who helped take such good care of her. | ROBERT E. GRAF PAWLET — Robert E. Graf, 84, died at his residence in the town of Rupert on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000. Born Nov. 5, 1915, in Rupert, he was the son of Georgianna (Leach) and Robert Graf. Mr. Graf graduated from Mt. Hermon in 1934 and St. Lawrence University in 1938 and was was a member of Alpha Tau Omega. He served 24 years in the Vermont legislature representing Rupert, Pawlet and Wells and was a justice of the peace. He was vice president of Soil Conservation; past president of Vermont Farm Bureau, a Mason, Shriner and a member of Modern Woodmen of America, Bennington County Regional Commisson and the Lady Bird Johnson Beautification Project. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Lois (Rees) Graf; three daughters, Marcia Russo, Vicki Graf and Cindi Roberts; eight grandchildren, David Russo, Joel Russo, Gabe Russo, Jeremy Russo, Genevieve Hathaway, Rebecca Grannis, Mimi Rerts and Paul Roberts; three great-grandchildren, Emma Russo, Sarah Russo and Kaylan Hathaway. | ELIZABETH NORMAND HISER (FITZPATRICK) November 19, 1949 – August 9, 2000 CHARLOTTE — Elizabeth Hiser died unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 9, 2000. Born in New York City on November 19, 1949, she is survived by her husband, John Hiser; her daughter, Jessica Normand, 19; her sons, Will Hiser, 10, Peter Hiser, 8, of Charlotte; and her parents, Howard and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick of Cabot. She was the oldest of five children, and survived by, Nancy Chase of Montpelier, Howard Fitzpatrick of Cabot, William Fitzpatrick of Marshfield, and Amy Smith of Warwick, N.Y.; as well as six nieces and eight nephews. Elizabeth, known to those who loved her as Betsy, held an M.S.R.D., and was a nationally recognized nutritionist and author. She was a leader in clinical research, teaching, and made unique contributions in the area of diabetes, heart disease and weight control. Before being the founding nutrition editor of Eating Well Magazine, Elizabeth spent ten years as a research dietician for the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont. In 1998 her book, The Other Diabetes was published, to much success. Her numerous awards of recognition include: The American Dietetic Association’s Media Excellence Award, the Vermont Dietetic Association’s Pyramid Award, as well as The Institute of Food Technologies Science Journalism Award, and several nominations for the coveted James Beard Award. Elizabeth’s hobbies were gardening, wild flowers, walking, daily hikes up to Mt. Philo, and her passion for healthy cooking with ingenious self-thought recipes. | DONALD E. RATHE ALBURG — Donald E. Rathe, 73, of Alburg died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington following a long illness. He was born Feb. 3, 1927, the son of the late Armand and Laura (Lanoue) Rathe. Donald attend St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Winooski. He worked at W.C. Kirby, General Electric, and for many years at Rathe’s Sanitary Landfill in Colchester. Donald was a member of the Moose Lodge in St. Albans and the American Legion in Bristol. Among his many hobbies, he enjoyed playing pool and traveling where he spent the last 15 years, in Florida. | LUCIUS ELLIS SAXTON HUNTINGTON — Lucius Ellis Saxton, 90, longtime resident of Huntington, died Thursday, August 10, 2000 in Fletcher Allen Health Care. He was born in Essex February 2, 1910, the son of Warren and Minnie (Whitton) Saxton. He graduated from Cambridge High School and the Burlington Business College. He married Irene Phillips in Huntington on June 24, 1942 in the family homestead. She predeceased him in 1993. Lucius was an active member of the Huntington community. He was a member of the United Baptist Church of Huntington, where he was the organist for many years. He was active in the Chittenden County singing groups and loved entertaining the residents of Burlington Health and Rehabilitation with his ukelele. He painted all of the street signs for the Town of Huntington and many of the area business signs. He was an avid hiker and outdoorsman. He is survived by his daughter, Aida M. Pluss of Springfield; his grandchildren, Julia R. Pluss of Cambridge, Mass., Betsy M. Pluss of Syracuse, N.Y., Dale W. Pluss of Springfield, Vt. and many close friends. | THOMAS RALPH ""DOOBIE” LAPOINTE SHELBURNE — Thomas Ralph ""Doobie” LaPointe, 43, of Shelburne died on Saturday, August 12, 2000 while sailing on Lake Champlain. Born and raised in Winooski, Doobie attended Rice Memorial High School, Vermont Academy, and the University of Vermont. Doobie leaves his loving and beloved family; his wife, Maria Cimonetti, and their two daughters, Eliza, 13, and Sophie, 6; his mother, Cathryn ""Kit” Maroney Lapointe; and Uncle Bob Maroney of Winooski; his sister, Michele Steady and her husband, David, and their children, Mckay and Samantha; his brother, David and his wife, Suzanne and their children, David, Aaron, and Abby; Maria’s parents, Bill and Tanya Cimonetti; Maria’s brother, Mike and his wife, Wendi. He was predeceased by his father, Ralph Lapointe, and his dog, Luther. Doobie was a spirited free thinker, lover of mountains and water and of the many beautiful places in the northeast – especially Vermont. An avid hiker, snowshoer and sailor, Doobie enjoyed the outdoors on his own terms. He didn’t need to be an expert to have fun, nor did he need to reach the top every time; he found beauty along the way – as long as he had his equipment! Doobie enjoyed all sports, starting from when he served as batboy for his father’s baseball teams at UVM. Doobie was a teddy bear of a man with his hair wildly curled and an ear splitting grim. He had a firm handshake and if he knew you well, a manly hug, along with a boisterous welcome, arms akimbo. Doobie was everybody’s friend and a magnet for all people, especially children. Quick with a joke or a few kind words, his friends adored him. But most of all, he loved his family. He was so proud of Maria, who worked hard and long to become a midwife, of Eliza for her strength of spirit, and of his fun-loving and determined Sophie. He was a professional bartender, and if a bartender can be said to be a non-believer’s priest and confessor – that was Doobie. He brought class, dignity, honesty, humor and joy to his work. He will leave a void and ache in the hearts of all who knew him. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held on Friday, August 18, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lake Champlain Yacht Club, 2790 Harbor Road in Shelburne. A further gathering of family and friends will be held later that afternoon at 5:00 p.m. at the Ethan Allen Club, 298 College Street in Burlington. | ALICE F. COTE SPRINGFIELD — Alice F. Cote, 90, formerly of Wall Street, died Sunday afternoon at her home in the Pillsbury Manor Apartments in Burlington. She was born February 11, 1910 in Lancaster, N.H. , the daughter of Francis and Olivine (Bilodeau) Nadeau. She attended schools in Lancaster and graduated from Lancaster High School in 1927, as Valedictorian. She later worked for the farm bureau office in Lancaster for several years. On September 16, 1938, she married Alcide ""Al” Cote in Lancaster. She had made her home in Springfield since 1940, and together with her husband, they owned and operated the Springfield Bakery on Main Street for over 50 years. She was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, The Springfield Chamber of Commerce, The Springfield Quota Club, and the New England Retail Bakers Association. For the past 5 years, she and her husband have made their home in Burlington. Survivors include her husband – Alcide ""Al” Cote of Burlington; a daughter, Anne Highleyman of Treasure Island, Fla.; three sons, Alcide ""Pete” Cote, Jr. of Springfield, Armand ""Joe” Cote and his wife, Connie of Essex Junction ; and Andre Cote of Manassas, Va.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a sister, Doris Derosier of Lancaster, N.H.; two brothers, Donald Nadeau of Chester, and Hubert Nadeau of Lancaster, N.H.; and by several nieces and nephews. | WARREN R. ""BILL” CUBIT HYDE PARK — Warren Robert ""Bill” Cubit, 78, of Hyde Park passed away unexpectedly in a tractor accident at his home on Sunday afternoon, August 13, 2000. He was born in Craftsbury on December 13, 1921, the son of the late Edward Aubrey and Floadys Lucina (Wells) Cubit. He married the former Gladys ""Dolly” Dudley on June 18, 1949 and they had just celebrated fifty years of a loving marriage in June of 1999. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Force. He was a local dairy farmer for many years and in his retirement years fulfilled his lifelong dream of being a tractor trailer truck driver; by driving part-time for the Cole Turf Company in Johnson. He was an active member and Deacon of the First Congregational Church of North Hyde Park, Past Master of Mt. Norris Lodge #69 F & AM and Odd Fellows past Grand Master of The Grand Lodge of Vermont. He enjoyed baseball, playing as a younger man in the area leagues over the years, looked forward to deer hunting every year, and never passed up an good card game with his family. He loved to read, enjoying the quiet times spent in the den in his favorite gray recliner. But most of all, he loved his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and best friend. He will be greatly missed by all of those who had the special privilege of knowing and loving him. He attended Middlebury Union High School, where he would have been a senior this year. James loved life, and lived it to the fullest. Every day was an adventure for him. If he wasn’t out with his friends, he could be found in the backyard working on someone’s car. He was the original ""shade tree mechanic”. James had so many friends who were around so much, that they became part of the family. He was a very loving, sensitive, gentle, and generous young man who was always there to lend a hand, and was loved by all who knew him. He leaves his mother and stepfather, Leatrice and Terry Morris; his father, Tracy Goodrich; brother and sister-in-law, Shawn and Amanda Richards, and their daughter, Ryann Richards; his sister Kim Richards; a very special uncle, Rodney Richards; and a very special teacher who was very influential in his life, Mr. Cousino. | ANNIE AGNEW SANDOR BURLINGTON — Annie A. Sandor, 60, died Sunday, August 13, 2000 in the Starr Farm Nursing Center in Burlington. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland on February 11, 1940, the daughter of the late George and Williamina (Aitkin) Agnew. She is survived by two daughters, Karen and her husband, Dan Justice of St. George, Eva and her husband, Joe Kranz of Winooski; five grandchildren, D.J. Justice, Joshua, Emily, Joey, and Abigail Kranz; one sister, Wilma and her husband, Jorge Faith of Norwalk, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves several brothers and sisters and their families that live back home in Scotland. Annie was a very dedicated mom to her two daughters and will be deeply missed. She was kind hearted, fun loving and made many friends during her life and will be missed by them as well. | IRMA B. WILLIAMS WATERBURY — Irma B. Williams, 89, a lifelong resident of Waterbury, passed away in the Squier House on Sunday, August 13, 2000. Born in Waterbury on August 9, 1911, she was the daughter of the late James R. and Florice (Corse) Stewart. On October 11, 1931, she married Donald B. Williams in Richford. Mr. Williams passed away on February 24, 1983. Survivors include two sons, Willsie D. Williams of Duxbury, and J. | FLORENCE BRAGG KLECKA, R.N. GEORGIA — Florence Bragg Klecka, R.N., 100, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away Monday evening, August 14, 2000 in Northwestern Medical Center. She was born in Georgia October 17, 1899, the daughter of the late Merritt O. and Jessie A. (Barnes) Bragg. Her husband, John J. ""Jack” Klecka died November 4, 1977. They were married in Mt. Vernon, N.Y. on February 18, 1937. In 1949 they returned to the home place in Georgia from Mt. Vernon and established a Massey Ferguson and New Holland Farm Machinery dealership, which they operated until retirement in 1971. Florence was a graduate of the Mary Fletcher School of Nursing, class of 1922. She was a member of Banner Grange #356, the Georgia Historical Society, and Northwestern Medical Center Auxiliary. She served on the Presidential Task Force during the Reagan Administration. She held all offices within the Georgia United Methodist Church and was the first female to be elected as a Trustee of the church. Survivors include a step-son and his wife, Jackie and Phyllis Klecka of Fort Wayne, Ind.; three nieces, Shirley Moss of Georgia Plain, Rachel Magoon of Waldorf, Md., and Marjie Lang and her husband, Arnold of St. Albans Town. She also leaves a nephew, Gerald Bragg of Georgia. In addition to her husband, Jack, she was predeceased by three brothers, Daniel Bragg, Wellington Bragg, and Merton Bragg; and two sisters, Elida Spooner and Grace Bragg and a nephew, Willard Spooner. | JOHN HENRY GROH III COLCHESTER — John Henry Groh III passed away on Tuesday, August 15, 2000, at the age of 83. He was the husband of Eunice Sylvia Groh. They had been married for 54 years. Mr. Groh was born in Boston, Mass. on November 1, 1916, the son of John and Ella (Flatow) Groh II. He served in the Army during World War II in Italy and the Phillipines. John followed in his father’s footsteps and became a pharmacist, graduating from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Class of 1951. He worked as a pharmacist for several stores in the area. In addition to his wife, Eunice, he leaves a sister, Marie L. Groh in Auburn, Mass.; cousins, and his friends. | MARGARET GRANT PATERSON CRAFTSBURY/NEW YORK CITY — Margaret Grant Paterson, 85, a former resident of Craftsbury and New York City, died Wednesday, August 16, 2000 in Copley Hospital in Morrisville. She was born in Craftsbury, October 28, 1914, the daughter of James and Frances (Grant) Paterson. She was a 1932 graduate of Craftsbury Academy, received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Vermont and in 1943 earned her Master’s in Social Work from Northwestern University in Chicago. Miss Paterson was employed for many years by the Community Service Society of New York City. About 6 years ago, she returned to Vermont and resided at Union House in Glover and later entered the Community Care Center in East Craftsbury. She had recently moved to Copley Manor in Morrisville. She was a member of Riverside Church in New York City and transferred her membership to the United Presbyterian Church in East Craftsbury. Her nieces and nephews were a very important part of her life. She leaves 2 brothers, Robert Paterson of Boise, Idaho, and Thomas Paterson of New York City; 2 sisters, Mary Roberts of Montpelier and Dorothy Smith of Southington, Conn.; 19 nieces and nephews and many cousins. She was predeceased by 2 brothers, James and John Paterson and a sister, Martha McCarty. | GRACE E. (TWITCHELL) BOLSTER LONDONDERRY — Grace E. Bolster, 99, of Londonderry, died Thursday, August 17, 2000 in the Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on November 28, 1900, a daughter of Homer J. and Myra L. (Kingsbury) Twitchell. She attended local schools and graduated from Montpelier Seminary, class of 1922. She was very fond of young children and enjoyed gardening, and loved her cats. Before her marriage in 1926 to William Ralph Bolster of Weston, a local herdsman, she taught elementary school in Peru and Weston. After their marriage, they lived briefly in N.J. before moving to Mass., where they remained until they returned to South Londonderry in the 1970’s. Mr. Bolster died in 1982. She is survived by two nephews, James H. Twitchell of Londonderry and A. Robert Twitchell of South Londonderry; a niece, Catherine (Bolster) Beers of N.Y.; several gndnieces and grandnephews; as well as a sister-in-law, Helen T. Twitchell of South Londonderry. She was preceded in death by her sister, Charlotte K. Twitchell Shattuck, who died in 1982, and her brother, Arthur K. Twitchell who died in 1986. | CATHERINE STEWART HOWARTH CARTER-LEWIA DELAND, FLA./JOHNSON — Catherine Stewart Howarth Carter-Lewia, 86, retired attorney-at-law, of DeLand, Fla. and Johnson, Vt., died Thursday, August 17, 2000 in the Woodland Terrace nursing home in DeLand. Dr. Carter spent her summers in Vermont starting in 1946, and lived for many years in retirement in her home on Ober Hill in Johnson. In addition to her legal practice, she also had a marriage counseling practice until the mid-1980’s. She was also active in many community projects. Dr. Carter was the 112th woman to be admitted to practice of law in the state of Florida. A graduate of Stetson University and Stetson University Law School, she also held a Master’s Degree in International Law from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Following her graduation from law school in May of 1934, at the age of 20, she was the youngest attorney to ever receive her law degree from Stetson. She received special dispensation from the Florida Supreme Court and was licensed to practice law in Florida before she was 21. Prior to her retirement, she was honored by the Florida Bar Association for 50 years of practicing law in Fla. She joined her mother and uncle, Mary Stewart Howarth-Hewitt and Tom B. Stewart in the law firm of Stewart & Stewart, established in 1882 by her grandfather, Isaac A. Stewart. In later years, she was joined by her son Brinly S. Carter, another Stetson Law School graduate, and the firm continued as Carter & Carter until his death in the late 1980’s, the family law firm having given over 100 years of service to area residents. A life-long member of the Florida Bar Association, she served on its probate and constitution committees, the latter of which proposed a revision of the Florida Constitution. She also servedas the Florida Bar representative to the 1945 and 1947 sessions of the Florida Legislature. In 1947, Mrs. Carter’s interest in real estate law led her to become a founding trustee of the Lawyer’s Title Guarantee Fund, which is now known as the Attorney’s Title Insurance Fund, and is the largest title insurance underwriter in Florida, and the sixth largest in the United States. A Democrat for her entire life, Mrs. Carter served as Congressional Committeewoman for the Fifth District of Florida. She was also campaign manager for Millard F. Caldwell, Jr., in his successful campaign to become governor of Florida in 1945. Mrs. Carter was predeceased by her husband, Henry G. Lewia of Johnson and her sons, Casper H. Carter of Nashville, Tenn. and Brinly S. Carter of DeLand, Fla. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Sara Carter Moreau of DeLand, Fla.; her son, John S. H. Carter of Lovell, Main; and her step-son, Gordon Lewia, of Morrisville, Vt.; and twelve grandchildren and step-grandchildren. | CHARLES JOSEPH BRULEY GRAND ISLE — Charles Joseph Bruley, 91, died Sunday, August 20, 2000 in Birchwood Terrace Nursing home in Burlington. Mr. Bruley was born in North Hero on Sept. 9, 1908, the son of Edwin and Melvina (Pearo) Bruley. He had worked for many years for Thermo Wire in South Hero. He had also worked in poultry and dairy farming, as a logger, in construction, and for the Rutland Railroad. Charles was married to Edith Mae Jacobs, who predeceased him. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grand Isle. He is survived by his sons and their wives, Edwin and Yvonne Bruley of South Burlington, and Richard and Marie Bruley of Orangeburg, S.C.; and by his grandchildren, Edwin Jr., Dawn and Shawn Bruley; and by his great-grandchildren, Staci, and Kaitlyn. | MAURICE GREENIA COLCHESTER — Maurice ""Moe” Greenia, age 74, of Holy Cross Road in Colchester, died Monday, August 21, 2000 in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, following a long illness. He was born in Charlotte on August 13, 1926, the son of the late Rufus and Marion (Whitney) Greenia. He served in the United States Army in World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was married in Burlington, on June 22, 1948 to Shirley (Bean). He worked for 42 years for Goss Tire Company, and was a carrier for the Burlington Free Press for the past 21 years. He was an avid bird watcher. He enjoyed the countless hours spent with his grandchildren. He took pride in his newspaper route, never missing a delivery in 21 years. | VICTOR A. JARVIS ST. ALBANS — Victor A. Jarvis, 78, a lifelong resident of St. Albans, passed away peacefully at his home, with his family at his side, on Monday afternoon, August 21, 2000. He was born in St. Albans on August 8, 1922, the son of the late Victor J. and Emma (Cota) Jarvis. On October 1, 1966 he married Lucille B. (Messier) Wells, who survives him. He owned and operated Vic’s Auto Body Shop in St. Albans for many years. Vic served with the 112th Infantry in the European Theater during World War II and received the Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medal. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and belonged to St. Albans Lodge #1566, BPOE, Robert E. Glidden Post 758, VFW, Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion and Champlain Country Club. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling and jigsaw puzzles. His greatest joy was his family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. In addition to his wife of 34 years, Lucille, Vic is survived by two sons, Brent and his wife, Lana Jarvis of Colchester, Clark Jarvis of South Royalton; a step-daughter and her husband, Jan and Stan Wells of St. Albans; two step-sons, Donald and his wife, Nancy Wells of Fairfield and Richard and his wife, Nancy Wells of New Gloucester, Maine. | PAUL R. TEETOR MIDDLEBURY — Paul R. Teetor departed this life on Monday, August 21, 2000 in the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington of both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. He had been ill, gradually totally disabled for the past decade. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Katherine (Schindler) Teetor, who was at his bedside when he died; by daughter, Kathe (Phillip J.) Bowen; son Paul Robert; and five grandchildren: Matthew, Peter, and Diana Bowen, Nathan and Everett Teetor. Also surviving are brother, Stephen Douglas Teetor of Poultney, Vt. and Maui; nephews Douglas, Paul, and Mark Teetor, and niece, Nomeca Hartwell; son-in-law, Phillip J. Bowen and daughter-in-law, Anna Margaret Speicher. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Evangeline (Downey) of Laramie, Wyoming and Paul Teetor of Shandon, Ohio, and by an infant son. Paul was born in Detroit, Mich. in 1919. His early schooling was completed at Troy Conference Academy, Poultney and then he entered Princeton University, graduating in 1940. He joined the Army Air Corps, flying on a B-17, which was shot down during a bombing raid over Regensburg. He was a prisoner of war of the Germans for fifteen months in Stalagluft #1, liberated in early 1945. He resumed his legal studies at Columbia University, winning an LLB in 1947. As long planned, he became a member of the Vermont Bar. His Middlebury practice was interrupted when he was called up for Korean War Service. As an artillery officer, he commanded a firing battery stationed near enemy lines. Subsequently, he reopened his law office, making a succesful run for the State’s Attorney of Addison County. He organized the Vermont chapter of United World Federalists, serving on the National Board. In 1954, he joined the legal staff of Shell Oil. Early cases called for residence in Calif., where he earned an LLM at the University at Berkeley. In a career shift, he became an anti-trust prosecutor for the Federal Trade Commission and was elevated to the federal Administrative Law bench. In all his work, he was foremost an officer of the court. His family spent summers at Thompson’s Point, Charlotte, coming from a distance until retiring to live in Middlebury. Judge Teetor was a member of the Selden Society, the American Society for Legal History, the Cosmos Club. Services will be held in St. Stephen’s Church in Middlebury at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 25, 2000. Graveside rites, including a military salute will be for the family only. | LONIE BLANCHE (FOSS) GRAVES WOLCOTT — Lonie Blanche (Foss) Graves, 91, passed away peacefully in the Morrisville Center of Genesis Eldercare on Wednesday afternoon, August 23, 2000. She was born in Wolcott on June 5, 1909, the daughter of the late Emery John and Eva (Kinney) Foss. She married Ralph Everton Graves on June 5, 1929. He predeceased her in August of 1970. Lonie was a member of the Wolcott Methodist Church and Lamoille Grange No. 233. She enjoyed caring for her family, friends and patients. Lonie didn’t have time to be sick until the last few years. An L.P.N. at Copley Hospital for 30 years, a private duty nurse and mid-wife, a life-long Granger and farmer, she worked hard and long hours most of her life in the service of others. In between, she found time to make boiled dinners, pies, donuts, and ""fee-fees”. In later life, she spent many happy hours playing bingo. Lonie spent several winters in Florida, doing all the driving down and back, completing her last trip at the age of 85. She will be greatly missed by everyone. | BRADLEY SHERWIN HART MORRISVILLE — Bradley Sherwin Hart died August 23, 2000 in Morrisville. He was born on Nov. 12, 1918, the son of Jason and Ethel (Sylvester) Hart of Northfield. After attending Northfield High School and NYA School of Electronics, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. At the end of World War II, he entered radio broadcasting and was an engineer for several radio stations in Mass., Vt., and N.H. He was employed at General Electric in Burlington, in the environmental lab for 17 years, retiring in 1967. Always active in the Boy Scouts of America, he later organized and was the first scoutmaster of Troop 92 in Williston. He was a member of the Puffer United Methodist Church in Morrisville. He was employed at the Morristown Centennial Library. Brad belonged to several round and square dance clubs. Brad will be remembered for his love of music and dancing, his love of people and his sense of humor. He leaves his wife, Elizabeth and one son, David. A memorial service will be held to celebrate his life on Sunday, Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. in Puffer United Methodist Church in Morrisville. Burial will be at a later date in St. Albans. | FRANCES (STUMPF) BASTIAN WILLISTON — Fran Bastian of Williston passed on to her much deserved peaceful rest early on the morning of August 24, 2000, in Fletcher Allen Health Care. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Franny and Mike Seguin of Burlington. Fran was born on July 4, 1921, in Manhattan, N.Y. She married Merlyn ""Mac” Bastian on October 16, 1948. He predeceased her on August 7, 1993. She was also predeceased by an infant daughter, Mary, in 1958. Fran was an accomplished seamstress. She took great pride and served well in several jobs, including positions at the House of Sewing in Essex Junction, the Daffodil, Almy’s, The Diet Workshop and Weight Watchers. She will be remembered as an extremely generous person. Thank you, mom, for your lesson in unconditional love. Fran was lovingly cared for in her last months with great kindness and compassion by the staffs at Green Mountain Nursing Home and Smith Four at Fletcher Allen Health Care. | JAMES JOHN AAMODT SWANTON — James John Aamodt, 65, died Saturday evening, August 26, 2000 at his residence on Mountain View Drive. Jim was born in Fargo, N.D. on April 7, 1935, the son of Percy and Cecila (Grommesh) Aamodt. He graduated from Barnesville High School in Barnesville, Minn. and also from the North Dakota State University. On August 8, 1959, he married the former Twylah M. Franklin who survives him. For thirty years, Jim was associated with the United States Department of Justice, retiring in 1990 as a Special Agent for the U.S. Border Patrol. On September 4, 1990, he became associated with the United States Marshall Service and was assigned as a court security officer at the Federal Building in Burlington. Due to his illness, he retired in June of this year. He served his country during the Korean Conflict in the United States Army and was an active member of the American Legion, Green Mountain Post One in St. Albans, and served as the Legion’s Financial Officer for several years. He was a devoted member of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and served as a commissioner and sexton of Saint Mary’s Cemetery for ten years. He was also a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Barnesville, Minn. Council. In addition to his wife, Twylah of forty one years, Jim leaves his mother, Mrs. Cecilia Aamodt of Barnesville, Minn.; a son, Michael J. Aamodt of North Hero; three daughters, Loree L. Garceau and her husband, Greg of St. Albans, JoLea J. Aamodt and her husband, Randy Reed of Sheldon and Kristie K. Aamodt of Bakersfield; four grandchildren, Tammy, Kelsey, Britney, and Missy, all of St. Albans, and a very special family friend, Mary Beaulieu of Swanton. He was predeceased by a daughter, Tammy Rae Aamodt on March 7, 1987. | DAVID ALLEN SANTOR ST. ALBANS/GRAND ISLE — March 8, 1937, God gifted Clifford H. and Leola G. (Tourville) Santor with David. In the early morning hours of August 26, 2000, God left David’s body to eternal rest and placed his spirit as a brilliant star in his heavens. David grew to be a full-of-life and lived-life-to-the-fullest person, who was often considered somewhat of a daredevil, who raced motorcycles, cars and snow machines. His marksmanship skills afforded him a High Master standing in pistol competition. His love for fishing and hunting with his family and friends was his life’s blood. He devoted his life to loving and caring for his sister, Cora Sue Santor, taking full responsibility for her care and well-being after the passing of their parents, until the day he, too, passed from this world. Dave was a multi-talented and accomplished artisan of carpentry, mechanics and the culinary arts. He retired from the Vermont Army National Guard technician work force in 1987. He served his country in the Korean theater before marrying and fathering Kathy, Kevin, Kyle and Korey. When his marriage failed, he kept his children with him, raising them as mother and father until June 28, 1969, when he married Janet Jones. Together, they added Cayre-Ayne and Jason. When Jason returned to God, David held his family together to go forward and become more solid in their love for one another. Even though his family was large, he opened his heart and his door to many children and young adults who needed a home-away-from-home. There was always a bed, full plate, love and guidance. He showed no partiality in love or discipline. He was Daddy, Dad, Papa, Pops, and Uncle. Kathy and Ray, Kevin and Lisa, Kyle and Tessa, Korey and Ginger, and Cayre and Chip blessed him with grandchildren, R.J. LaLumiere, Nicole Champion, Brett and Dylan Santor, Kayne, Korina and Kali Santor, Lorey and Leeanne Santor, and Keynesha ""Chuck” and Elaine Brooke ""Trout” Santor. In turn, his great-grandson, Alexander LaLumiere, warmed his heart with his ”Tigger impersonations.” His brothers and sisters-in-law, Alden and Patricia Jones, Roger and Patricia Jones and Priscilla Stevens, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins, had special places in his heart. Dave had many dear and true friends, all of whom he cared for deeply.Those who shared in his life until its end are Roger and Carla Dewyea and family, Hank, Salaki and Chris Walker. Those who cannot speak for themselves but must mourn his passing in silence are his beloved dogs, Sabbath and Dakota; and his parrots, Spike, Dolly, Rusty, Chiquita and Mr. P. | ISABELLE MUNRO BARBER TARTE PITTSFIELD, MASS. — Mrs. Isabelle Munro Barber Tarte, 98, a resident of Springside of Pittsfield in Pittsfield, Mass., died on Saturday morning, August 26, 2000 at Springside. Mrs. Tarte was born on November 29, 1901 in Rowe, Mass., the daughter of Walter Lincoln and Genevieve (Munro) Barber. She attended a one room schoolhouse in Hoosac Tunnel, Mass. and was a graduate of Drury High School in North Adams and North Adams Normal School. Her marriage to Dolor Henry Tarte took place in June of 1929 in N.Y. State. Mr. Tarte died in 1967. In her earlier years, Mrs. Tarte resided in Hoosac Tunnel, North Adams and Pownal. She moved from Williamstown in 1995 to Springside. Mrs. Tarte spent a number of years as a schoolteacher in the area and also taught naturalization classes in North Adams. Mrs. Tarte is survived by a son Roderick Munro Tarte and his wife, Jean Horst Tarte of Williston; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and a niece and nephew. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Walter Lincoln Barber, Jr., and a sister, Ethel Lincoln Barber. ALBANS — Gertrude Allard Hebert, age 88, went to meet her Savior Sunday, August 27, 2000 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Bob Fielding, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in St. Albans, February 3, 1912 and was the last surviving of the nine children of the late Charles and Constance (LeHerisseir) Allard. She was a daily and lifelong communicant of Holy Angels Church, a charter member of the Holy Angels Mothers Club, a member of the Ladies of St. Anne, and D.O.E. member of the Elks Lodge, B.P.O.E. #1566. She was an avid bingo player. She was employed at Fonda Container, Union Carbide Consumer Products, and ended her work career as head cook at Kerbs Memorial Hospital. He was born June 22, 1951 in Montpelier, the son of Rita (Downs) Roby and the late Edgar F. Roby. He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1969 and from Johnson State College in 1973. He was currently employed by Stowe Mountain Resort. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; daughter, Kendra; and two stepdaughters, Laura and Angela Conti, all of Montpelier. | JOHN B. (JB) STEARNS PANTON — John B. Stearns (JB) died unexpectedly on August 27, 2000 at his home in Panton. For many years his presence has been a familiar one to many in VT and his sudden death will be heard with general surprise and regret. His life was in some respects a remarkably varied one and his history would make an interesting tale. JB was born in the back seat of a car in Fairlee on November 28, 1937, the son of Burnham S. and Beth (McKirryher) Stearns. He attended Rutland schools and the University of Kansas, receiving his graduate degree in Drama. He began his career as an educator at Leland and Gray in Townshend. Spending many of his later years in business and consulting, he continued to change the lives of those he touched. Some of his many accomplishments include: founding member of both Project Assist and VT Construction Career Council, and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Vergennes Rotary Club. As Director of Personnel and Training, he won the Lift America Award for Excellence in Employee Education. He served in town government in Newfane for 18 years and as chair of numerous education boards throughout the State of VT. He was an accomplished writer, who was published in many sporting journals and books. He leaves behind his wife and best friend of 26 years, Elaine (Druke) Stearns; his daughter, Sarah Wales and her husband, Ramon, of Vergennes; his son, Seth Stearns and his wife, Stephanie of Denver, Colo. and his dog, Sofi. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes. MARGARET LAMPMAN MONAGHAN CLEARWATER, FLORIDA — Margaret Lampman Monaghan of St. Albans died August 28th, after a short illness in Clearwater, Florida. Three brothers Rupert of Franklin, VT, Leonard of Colchester, VT and Robert of Louisville, KY, five grandchildren, five nephews and four nieces. Her son James preceded her in death. A celebration of live for Margaret was held on September 1st, at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Dunedin, FL. Internment and graveside service will be at Greenwood Cemetery in St. Albans, September 26th at 11:00 A.M. | ROLAND H. JAMES BRISTOL — Roland H. James, 62, died Wednesday, August 30, 2000 at his home in Bristol. He was born on March 2, 1938 in Middlebury, the son of Cecil and Mildred (Austin) James. Roland served in the U.S. Navy. He was a charter member of the Bristol Rescue Squad. He was an avid camper, hiker and canoeist. Roland donated many hours to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, building the replica of the Philadelphia. Roland is survived by his wife Dottie James of Bristol, three children, Richard and Gail James and their children Sarah, and Kayla of Bristol, Kevin and Loria James and their children, Tyler and Emily of Starksboro, Kyle James of Bristol; four step children, David and Beth Wimett and their children, Jake, Jessica, Dan and Ben of Brandon; Wendy and Mark Dwire and their children, Allison, and Andrea of Hancock; Brian and Alysia Wimett and their daughter, Natalie of Fla. Stacey and Steven Fillion and their children, Erika, and Sammie of West Addison; dearest friends, Lorraine Wry and Larry Reynolds of Bristol. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol. RAYMOND S. ""HUCK” ROGERS BURLINGTON — Raymond S. ""Huck” Rogers, formerly of Ferguson Avenue, died Wednesday, August 30, 2000 in Birchwood Terrace Health Care Center following a lingering illness. He was born May 4, 1918, in Lyndonville, the son of Henry Steven Rogers and Jennie (Lombard) Rogers. He and his family moved to Newport, where he graduated from Newport High School in 1938. He served in the Infantry during World War II and earned his 2nd lieutenant bars at Camp Blandon in Georgia. In 1945, he married Lillian Johnson in the Methodist Church in Bradford. They lived in Peoria, Ill., while he went to Bradley Horalogical School. They moved to Woodstock, Vt. in 1950, where Raymond was a watch maker and jeweler. While living in Burlington, he was a jeweler for Tick Tock Jewelers, but decided a new career would be a nice change. Raymond became a truck driver and enjoyed his new career. He enjoyed the people that he met on the road and made many new friends. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Burlington, a 50 year member of Grand Lodge F. & A.M. and the American Legion. He enjoyed his close knit family and their activities, as well as hunting and fishing. He is survived by his two children, Shelley Sisti of Burlington and Stephen Rogers of Colchester; three grandchildren, Anthony Sisti and wife, Beth, of Brunswick, Maine, Tara Schatz and husband, Eric, of Boothbay Harbor, Maine and Jennifer Rogers of Palm Harbor, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Abigail Sisti and Rowan Schatz; three nephews, Roy and Betsy, Bob and Lorraine and Albert and Doris Fallensbee; and four nieces, Kathleen Lowell, Barbara Gray and Hazel McKittrick and Geraldine Melanson. He was predeceased by his wife, Lillian (Johnson) Rogers, on January 30, 2000; two sisters, Doris Fallensbee and Eloise Gray Bean and by his brother, Lt. Col. Roy Rogers. A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 7, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. in the First United Methodist, Burlington. Burial will take place at a later date. There are no visiting hours. | ILA B. GRIGGS BRISTOL — Ila B. Griggs, 72, passed to the Lord Thursday, August 31, 2000 surrounded by her family. Ila was born September 15, 1927 to Ila and Roderick (Roy) Burritt of Hinesburg. She was raised in Monkton by Eva and Wesley Little. Ila attended Monkton School, Bristol High School and graduated from Burlington Business College. Ila was a member of the New Haven Congregational Church. Ila married Clois C. Griggs in Bristol in 1955. They owned and operated Griggs Sales and Service from 1967-1980. Ila is survived by her husband, Clois C. Griggs of Bristol; two children, Carroll Griggs and his wife, Laura and their children, Jennifer, Christopher and Carolyn; Elizabeth Orr and her husband, William and their children, Wesley, Rachel and Eva. Ila is survived by siblings, Daniel Burrit of Smyrna, Del.; Helen and Roger Layn of Monkton, Roderick and Carmi Burrit of Monkton; sisters-ilaw, Hope and Laura Burritt; many nieces, nephews, an aunt Iris Stacy, and many friends. She also leaves a very special and caring friend, Mary Alexander. She was predeceased by brothers Guy and George Burritt. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the New Haven Congregational Church. Interment will be in Maple Cemetery, Lincoln. | MARGARET B. RANSOM ST. ALBANS — Margaret B. Ransom, 78, died Thursday, August 31, 2000 in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. She was born on August 15, 1922 in Jericho Center, the daughter of Hugh (Adams) Ransom and Blanche (Flood) Ransom. Margaret graduated from St. Albans School of Nursing in 1943. She worked at Kerbs Memorial Hospital as Operating Room Supervisor retiring in 1965. From 1965-1983, Margaret worked as an Industrial Nurse for General Electric. She enjoyed arts and crafts, Major League Baseball and NASCAR Racing, and spending time with her family, and her nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sister, Mildred R. Bearor of St. Albans; brothers, Robert Ransom and his wife, Nancy of Essex Center, and Richard Ransom and his wife, Dale of Williston; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a niece, Shannon Touchette in 1991, and a brother, Alan E. Ransom in 1999, and aunt, Olive Ransom in 2000. Funeral services will be held on Saturday,Sept. 2, 2000 at 10 a.m. in the Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home, 9 Pleasant St., Essex Junction. Visiting hours are today from 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
